On Sunday we moved our clocks forward for Daylight Savings and it feels like the lights finally turned on around here. I LOVE that it stays lighter longer now! More light and the warm weather we've been having here in California is getting me excited for summer!!
How about you? Are you excited for summer yet?
Last night at a preschool board meeting we were discussing summer camp plans and I was amazed at how many people already had their summers all planned out! So, I thought I'd better start thinking ahead a little bit too...
Typically our summer involves four things...
1. Swimming lessons! Lessons start in May so that we're back in the swing of things when it gets really warm in June and kids feel comfortable and safe in the water. We aren't year-round swimmers here, so we only do lessons in the late spring/summer. I put my son in private lessons because he really struggles with group lessons and so far it has worked well. My toddler will start lessons this year.
2. Camp Mom! Camp Mom is filled with simple and inexpensive weekly activities and crafts based around a theme that I put together for my kids and some of our friends so that we aren't completely bored all summer long. I am brainstorming ideas for our Camp Mom right now. What is your child obsessed with? My toddler wants a car and dog themed week and my son would be happy with one filled with baking soda projects, one all about Legos, and one that is space and rocket themed. I think we will be busy!
3. Vacations to visit family or vacations with our extended family. Last summer we went to Virginia, North Carolina, Utah, and Hawaii. This summer we have nothing really planned. Are you going anywhere fun? Maybe we can live vicariously through you? Our remodel has zapped our budget so we will be having some creative staycations!
4. Summer camp close by our home. We usually choose camp based on our kid's interests, price of the camps, ratio of students/counselors, and when the camps are offered. As kids get older there are more and more awesome options!
This summer my son will be heading to Camp Galileo for the Space Odyssey themed week filled with cosmic art and rocket science. He is SO EXCITED since rockets and space are his current obsession. He is already counting down till the first day of camp. We should make some sort of rocket paper countdown chain.
How does your family spend the summer? Do your kids go to camp? Are you traveling anywhere fun? Are you super organized and do you have everything planned already?
(or are you like me and still figuring things out?)
Come share your summer vacation and camp plans (or dreams) in the comments or over on our Facebook page.

We're deciding about camp and summer plans now. We're going to the beach for a week, and my older son is going to be doing soccer camp…and maybe another one. Still deciding!
We've never done any summer camps, but they sound fun. We typically do a few vacations, and a lot more outside things like visiting the zoo, aquariums, parks, playgrounds, etc.
Ooh where in Hawaii? We went to Maui last year. I can't wait to go back! (someday)
I'm working om y summer camp fo rmy girls! I'm looking forward to summer! it is going to be so much fun! We are planning a trip a week to see something different and themes to go around that.
I just discovered your blog today and it looks like there's a ton of great ideas! I want to take some time to look through them more carefully later, but I wanted to say hi and thanks!
I'm very excited to go on a little weekend vacation with my son. He's going to be old enough to enjoy it a little more and it's going to be really fun to see him experience new things.
I am working on my kids summer camp schedule but it seems like a long way away given that today was 32 degrees cold! Sigh! Hoping for warmer weather soon!
