Have you ever heard the word "fine motor skills" and felt dumb because you didn't know what in the world people were talking about? Today we'll remedy that.
Here's a quick definition of fine motor skills...
"Fine motor skills are the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists." (from understood.org)
These little movements make a BIG impact!
Do you know why fine motor skills are important?
Fine motor skills are needed by kids and adults to do daily tasks like getting dressed, tying shoes, and brushing their teeth. Whenever you eat, you're using fine motor skills to grasp your food and pick it up with a fork.
Fine motor skills are also needed for some school related tasks, like the ones listed below:
- Holding a crayon or pencil
- Coloring a picture
- Drawing pictures and writing neatly
- Zipping up a backpack
- Stacking blocks and stringing beads
- Using scissors, rulers and other tools
Since fine motor skills are so important, it is good to start early and help kids have the opportunity to explore different materials and activities that will help them strengthen their finger muscles to prepare for school and life!
You can easily fit activities into each day to help strengthen these muscles and help you and your child feel relaxed and prepared for school.
