This month for our Virtual Book Club for Kids we are featuring books by Julia Donaldson! Room on the Broom is my absolute favorite story to read around Halloween time, so we read it and then came up with a super super craft to try along with it.
We made a shape witch craft since we really enjoy talking about shapes. This is a great activity for kids who are working on scissor skills too!
If you haven't read Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson before, I highly recommend you go grab it from your library or go pick up a copy. It is adorable and perfect for preschoolers although my toddlers likes to sit and listen to it too. The pictures are colorful and the book has some cool characters. My toddler loves the frog.
For our super simple witch shape craft you don't need very many materials!
Materials Needed:
- colored cardstock cut into shapes (black triangle and black rectangle for the hat, circle to fit the hat (any color), two squares for eyes (any color), long rectangle strips for hair, rectangle for mouth, triangle for nose).
- whie glue
- scissors
- one piece of cardstock to glue everything on to
To create:
To make the witch we glued the face down and then the hair.... and then we added the other littler shapes to make square eyes, a triangle nose, and rectangle strips,
Although our witch didn't look exactly like the witch in the book, we thought this was fun!
While we created we talked a lot about colors and shapes. I asked my daughter what colored shapes she wanted, so definitely give your kids choice. It was really easy to make them by myself and cut out each piece exactly how she wanted it,
Have you done any other shape projects recently?
Don't forget to bookmark our Virtual Book Club for Kids author list so that you can join back in in November! We will be featuring books by Eric Litwin (co-author of Pete the Cat) on November 13th. I can't wait!

What a fun way to practice shapes and tie it into the holiday season. Thanks for the great idea!
My 3 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed this activity today. Thank you. We also added a cat sat on a broom.
Fabulous – we will be doing this tomorrow – we did a variation of this but not with shapes specifically but collages with Family Portraits a few weeks ago.
What a cute and simple craft! Both my kids would love this!
I love this! My toddler is learning shapes so I know both my kids would love this craft!
