Why are fine motor skills activities important?
Fine motor skills activities prepare kids for future success with writing, self care skills, and more!
Here are a few reasons fine motor skills are important:
- Fine motor skills are needed by kids and adults to do daily tasks like getting dressed, tying shoes, and brushing their teeth. Whenever you eat, you're using fine motor skills to grasp your food and pick it up with a fork.
- Fine motor skills are also needed for some school related tasks, like holding a crayon or pencil, coloring a picture, drawing pictures and writing neatly, Zipping up a backpack, stacking blocks and stringing beads, using scissors, rulers and other tools!
- Fine motor skills also help kids build confidence and independence!
I share more about fine motor skills and how to help kids build them in my new ebook, Fine Motor Magic!

What's the best way to develop fine motor skills?
I believe that the best way for kids to build fine motor skills is through play and creating! Often the kids don't even realize that they are learning new skills or strengthen their hand and finger muscles.

Beaded Heart Activity Instructions
You won't believe how easy this activity is to set up and introduce!
1. Start by making a small ball of clay.
2. Next, stick a pipe cleaner into the clap and then give kids a tray of pony beads.
3. Now kids are ready to start beading!
4. Finally, once kids are done filling the pipe cleaner with beads, stick the other end of the pipe cleaner into the clay and squish the clay around the pipe cleaner to secure it in place.
5. Now bend the beaded pipe cleaner into a heart shape.
How can I adapt this for younger kids?
Warning! Pony Beads can be a choking hazard for young kids.
Instead, give younger kids cereal with holes in it to use for their "beading" activity. You can also use playdough instead of clay.
Kids can make a cereal beaded heart and then eat it!

Whether they use beads or cereal, kids are still building their fine motor skills as they thread!
DID YOU KNOW? Threading with beads is an excellent fine motor activity for preschoolers because it builds hand strength, enhances hand-eye coordination, and develops dexterity crucial for writing, zipping, and using utensils. The precise, repetitive motion strengthens finger muscles and encourages bilateral coordination (using both hands together), fostering patience, focus, and cognitive skills like patterning and color recognition.
