We love spring projects and we especially love flowers! My kids are constantly admiring them and trying to pick them and give them to people, so we thought we'd jazz up our house a bit and create our own shape flower garden.
We decided to focus on learning shapes for this activity since my toddler is very interested in them right now. She has a shape sorter that she loves and she is starting to remember the names of the shapes better and pair the name with the correct object, so this activity was a great way to reinforce that skill.
We're remodeling a portion of our house right now, so we have ram board all over... so we thought it made a great surface for our creations!
My kids told me several different favorite colored papers and shapes they wanted to use, so I got cutting with my paper cutter and they used my circle punch and then we started creating our garden.
I had just as much fun creating as they did.
After my son created on the ram board for a bit he decided it was limiting his space... so he spread out onto the wood floor.
My plan was to glue our creations in place... but the kids had another idea and wanted to be able to keep moving them around and then use them for a shape hunt... so we deviated a bit from my plan and had way more fun than we would've had if I had be in charge of the day.
After we were done making our flower garden, we stored the shapes in a ziploc bag for another time and then chose a few to use to have a shape hunt around our living room. We spent at least another 30 minutes hiding and hunting the shapes. It was a lot of fun and a perfect activity while we were waiting for the baby to wake up from his nap so that we could get out of the house.
