"The Polar Express" has quickly become a favorite book in our house this season. Shortly after the main character boards the train he not only describes the scene inside, but the tastes of the treats available: "candies with nougat centers as white as snow" and "hot cocoa as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars". This inspired us to try to make some of our own.
[This Candy Bar Hot Chocolate recipe from Food.com came the closest I could find to the above description - I've tweaked it slightly.]
Ingredients
1/2 Cup Mini Marshmallows
1 Fun Size Package 3 Musketeers (8 mini wrapped bars)
1-2 C. Milk
[Yields: 2-3 small servings]
Cut candy bars into small pieces and place in microwave safe bowl (my kids loved this part, especially the youngest: he'd cut a piece, eat a piece, cut a piece, eat a piece . . . his sister (the rule follower) was not amused).
Heat in microwave until candy is melted (30 seconds to 1 minute).
Add 1/2 cup of milk and whisk until smooth. Add marshmallows and another half cup of milk. Heat in microwave another 30 seconds to 1 minute until marshmallows are almost melted. Stir until smooth. Add more milk (up to 1 cup more) for a thinner consistency.
Cool slightly, pour into mugs, open your copy of the Polar Express
. . . and enjoy! We were thrilled to discover that this recipe did in fact yield a hot chocolate that tasted like "melted candy bars". It's very rich and something that we will probably only make once a year - but so much fun to use our imagination to bring the book alive. Will you be making some too?
Making Polar Express hot cocoa is one of our favorite holiday activities. We also have been having fun with our A Very Toddler Christmas series- 23 days of Christmas activities. Come join in!
When my daughter and I make something like this, we use just 1 milky way and milk. We cut up the candy bar, put in a mug and fill with milk. Then we microwave it for 30 sec intervals, stirring after each until melted. Not as rich. This is her favorite kind of cocoa! We have tried most candy bars with nougat!
We aren't fans of three musketeers. Does the drink taste just like the candy? What other candy could be a possible replacement?
I bet my kids will love this
I would try Milky Way Midnight Dark. It has the "white as snow nougat centers". Plus the caramel layer can't be a bad thing !
I don't microwave, I'm going to give this a try on low heat stovetop. It sounds wonderful! I love three musketeer candy bars!
Yummmyyy! Kids will love doing this! Can't wait to try it out 🙂
of all the bars to try, I would never have though 3 musketeers would work! so interesting!
Sounds like an interesting and yummy change from the usual hot cocoa. My kids love this book and movie too.
