After all the fun my toddler had with her Number Bug Sticky Wall the other day, my 5 year old wanted to do his own sticky wall activity.
We were inspired by No Time for Flashcard's Rhyming Peg Board and decided to make our own Pipe Cleaner Rhyming Sticky Wall.
We are constantly rhyming while we are in the car or playing around the house. My 5 year old also loves rhyming poems or silly phrases too! For this activity we created a simple sticky wall frame and added some words underneath it. It is super easy to pull the sticky wall fram off, change the words, and play again!
Supplies: painters tape, contact paper, cardstock/notecards, marker, and pipe cleaners
Directions:
First we wrote different rhyming words on lined strips (you can also use cardstock or note cards). We made sure each word had a rhyming match.
Then we used painters tape and stuck the rhyming words on our kitchen cupboards. We put one word from each pair in each column.
Next we made the sticky wall frame by attaching contact paper, sticky side out, on top of the cupboard and putting a painters tape border around it to keep it in place.
After the wall was set up, we grabbed some pipe cleaners and started matching the words!
You could also use yarn or ribbon instead of pipe cleaners. If words were far from each other, we twisted two pipe cleaners together so that they could reach. This was a ginormous matching activity and it was hugely popular! Any kids that came to our house wanted to try it right away.
The key to making this activity fun is to make sure that your child can read the words... or at least can sound them out! Start simpler and then change the words and make them harder as your child gets better at reading. If your child gets visually overwhelmed, start with only three pairs of words instead of six.
The only bad part about this activity is that my son is having so much fun with it that I can't get into my cupboards! I have to take the sticky wall off several times a day and then put it back.
Toddler Version:
Later today we'll be doing a toddler variation on this activity and I will post a picture. We will be doing it with alphabet letters and shapes!
Instead of words, stick several pairs of matching shapes on the wall. Your child can make the pipe cleaners connect to the matching shapes! You can also do the same thing with alphabet letters. You can use all capital letters or have your child match capital and uppercase letters.
