I love baking and doing cooking projects with kids. Today I'm going to share a simple Easter treat that we love to make each year.
We definitely don't do enough cooking/baking together at our house (other than making cookies)... so today we decided to make some Easter treats. Making messes, licking chocolatey spatulas, counting and measuring... we loved it!
Ingredients:
5 1/2 cups cornflakes
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 bag mini chocolate chips
1/4 cup (or so) milk
10 oz of mini marshmallows
Muffin tin liners
Some peeps & Cadbury mini eggs (for inside the nests)
Directions:
1. Melt butter in the large pan on low. Add chocolate chips and milk. Stir until melted.
2. Add the marshmallows and mix until melted and gooey!
3. Lick the spoon!!! 🙂
4. Measure out 5 1/2 cups of cornflakes and pour them into the pan of gooeyness.
5. Mix until covered.
6. Add a spoonful of chocolatey cornflakes into each muffin tin liner.
7. Use the spoon to make a little hole in the center.
8. Stick Cadbury mini eggs and a peep into each nest.
Start eating! 🙂
We ate a bunch and then shared some too.
I grew up baking with my mom all the time and attending her kid's cooking classes. Today definitely reminded me that I need to goof around in the kitchen a little more with my kiddos... especially doing simple kid friendly activities. I have a feeling that my son would be a much better eater (and less picky) if he spent more time helping create snacks and meals with me.
I also think that cooking together in the kitchen creates SUCH a great environment for fostering language development: asking/answering questions, learning new words, making requests, etc.
If you do other versions of this simple treat, share them in the comments section! Or if you have any other cool Eastery snacks, I'd love to hear about them. This was just the variation we came up with today and I am always looking for new treats to try and make. We are kind of treat-a-holics at our house 🙂
this is such a cute idea! How many nests does the recipe make?
This is a really cute idea! I think that I'm going to use it for a day camp that I'm doing… do you happen to know how long it took you?
Lauryn they are super quick to make. Melting the chocolate and marshmallows takes the longest… maybe 10-15 minutes total plus cooling time?
Thanks Natalie!! So glad our fun can help you have fun too!
I just wanted to tell you how much I love this blog. I don't even remember how I found it, but I use your ideas for inspiration all the time with my 3-year old. She loves them and so do I. 🙂 So thank you!
Wish we lived closer to be some of those friends you shared them with! Haven't tried this version but it looks yummy. I usually make the nests using the same recipe I use to make Rice Krispy Treats but substitute Shredded Wheat for the Rice Krispy's, and do all of the melting in the microwave – super fast and easy cleanup
