We also (heart) hunting for things... so with this activity we combined both to create a fun heart-themed counting activity (similar to our Pot O' Gold hunt for St. Patrick's Day)!
Materials Needed:
- felt (we used red and white)
- scissors
- large drawing paper
- sharpie
- basket (we got our cute heart shaped basket in the Target $1 aisle)
Directions:
1. Cut out 10 hearts (you can use 10 hearts to count from 1-10 or from 1-20- just write numbers 11-20 on the backs of the hearts)
2. Lay out the hearts on drawing paper and trace around them.
3. Write numbers 1-10 on the traced hearts
4. Write numbers 1-10 on the felt hearts
5. Hide the hearts all around one room (or the whole house if you want this to take all day ;)... and start hunting! We collected our hearts in a heart-shaped basket.
6. Take each felt heart out of the basket once you have found all of them. Read the number on each heart and then match it to the corresponding traced heart on the drawing paper.
7. Count the hearts and make sure you have 10!
8. We also skipped around and I pointed at different numbers and had my little guy try and tell me the name of the number (out of order) so that I could check and see which numbers we need to practice more. Number 6 was the only tricky one today... and I think it was because of how I wrote it.
I don't think we're ready to move up to numbers 11-20 yet, but if you are, go for it! It will give you even more numbers to hunt for!
We also had a really interesting discussion about numbers and letters... since my number one also looks like a lowercase letter l to my son (and the number 9 looks like an upside down p to him). We're going to be doing some letter/number sorting later this week to work on figuring out the differences between letters and numbers!
P.S.- Check out this week's Kindness Challenge if you haven't yet. It is not too late to join our 100 Acts of Kindness Project. We still have three weeks until Valentine's Day!
We have been LOVING different ideas that people have sent regarding how they are counting their 100 Acts of Kindness... and how they completed last week's Kindness Challenge. Check out these cute ideas that were posted on The Work Plan's Montessori Monday today. Thanks for sharing!!
wowzers, I just spotted this on Pinterest & I did the same thing with my girls and just posted ours today as part of a whole heart themed math post! haha! Great minds think alike – it was a fun activity! We did 11-20 for my preschooler and number words for my Kindergartener.
Too funny Bern! I'm sure yours are adorable. I will go check them out. I almost hate to look at Pinterest after I come up with an idea for that exact reason!!
Fun ideas for number activities! And great idea to add links to 100 Acts of Kindness inspiration! I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page at facebook.com/LivingMontessoriNow
I heart this!!
