Awhile back I read about this Super Spy Training Party and bookmarked it for when my son got older... then a few weeks ago my running buddy Cindy told me about this fun St. Patrick's Day activity she likes to do with her kids where they follow the rainbow yarn to find the pot o' gold.
So, I decided to combine her idea and the spy training obstacle course and create our own Hunt for the Pot o' Gold... like a spy.
This activity was a big hit with my 4-year-old. The 1-year-old wasn't a big fan, so I would recommend doing this activity when little ones are napping... though all kids are different, so yours might have fun?
Materials Needed: Yarn in rainbow colors, some painter's tape, objects to wind the yarn around, and a pot o' gold!
The directions for making your spy course aren't hard, so I'm not going to write them out step by step. Work with one color yarn at a time and wind it around things. Make it go high and low and make sure to have your kids help! Lastly, make sure to put your pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow spy course.
The course
(it wound around the corner and down the hallway too)
Let the games begin!
The pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow!
We also had a bag of rainbow M&Ms at the end of the course... since my son said that being a spy was HARD WORK and so tiring and he needed some M&Ms for energy. 🙂
I also let him swat at the yarn and practice snipping it with scissors to dismantle it once we were done playing with the spy course. I got an excellent workout doing this activity too because I had to go through the course every time I needed to go into the kitchen. I was exhausted by the end!
Once we were done dismantling the course, we gathered all the yarn tidbits and made ourselves some awesome St. Patrick's Day hairstyles.
We also made some fun craft projects with the yarn remnants. We'll be sharing them with you next week!
What did we learn?
During this activity we...
- talked about directional words like high/low/under/over
- identified the colors of our rainbow yarn
- problem solved how to make it through the course
- practiced conflict resolution skills when the baby would knock down the course, making the preschooler mad 🙂
- worked on some snipping skills with scissors
- got our bodies moving and had loads of fun!!
Have you done any obstacle courses or spy activities with your kids?? If so, share them with me in the comments.

Oh wow!! that looks so much fun 🙂 I wanna try that myself..haha!!
Oh man, my boys would LOVE this ! Thanks for the idea. We will definitely be making our own obstacle course soon !
This is such a GREAT idea! thanks so much for sharing!! I recently took my kids on an outdoor Bear Hunt after being inspired by Catherine over at one of my favorite blogs–(sunhatsandwellieboots.com). We did it outside and added some sensory elements to it:

This. Is. Awesome. I'm going to feature it tonight with some other St. Patrick's Day ideas at Preschool Powol Packets–let me know if that's a problem!
Oh, I am definitely going to pin this one! What a fantastic idea!!!!!
Thanks Eddie!
This is the coolest ever. Now I am singing the music from that scene in one of the Ocean's Eleven movies where the French guy is dancing through the lasers. LOVE this activity and your photos 🙂
Thanks Chrissy. I totally felt like a spy when I was falling down trying to get through this… kinda like Mission Impossible. 🙂
