My six year old is currently obsessed with the game Connect Four. We love having family competitions and now my 3-year-old likes to drop the pieces into the grid again and again and again and play with us too.
Since my 3-year-old daughter also loves alphabet activities, we decided to create this fun alphabet match & drop game using our current obsession... Connect Four. Scroll down to see how you can use it without a Connect Four grid too.
Materials:
All you need for this alphabet match & drop game is either Connect Four (pieces & grid board) plus ABC stickers OR some bottle lids and a cardboard box (plus ABC stickers).
How to play:
Add alphabet stickers to your Connect Four pieces (or bottle tops if you don't have Connect Four).
Then mix the pieces up on the floor or on the table and try and find the matches!
Once you find the match, drop both pieces into the Connect Four grid! Then search for a new match and do the same thing again! We played until all of the matches were dropped into the grid... then we released them, let them fall, and started over again.
If you don't have Connect Four you can just put thin slits in a box and have kids drop the alphabet bottle caps into a box instead.
As soon as we started playing this game my 6-year-old had to join in and "help" with the matching as well. My 17-month-old also wanted a turn, so the big kids gave him the matches and they let him drop some of them into the grid as well.
Note: If your little one likes to put things in his mouth, hold off on this game until he is a bit older.
This alphabet match & drop activity is a simple way to introduce kids to alphabet letters in a fun way.
If your child isn't ready for matching alphabet letters yet, you could just match stickers with pictures on them or colored dot stickers.
My 6-year-old son made this activity even harder for himself by trying to spell words with the pieces first and then dropping them into the grid. I love how Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas shared how they played Sight Word Connect Four. That is another great activity extension for older kids.
