Although we aren't ready to move into full blown Halloween crafting yet, we decided to create a simple Pumpkin Shape Movement Game to share with you as part of our weekly Move & Learn series.
- Pumpkin Shape cards (printed on orange cardstock)
- Pumpkin Shape pieces (traced onto black paper if you'd like)
- Black cardstock
- Lamination sheets or contact paper
- Painters Tape
Before you can play you'll need to print out our Pumpkin Shape cards, cut them out, and laminate them! You will also need to print out the Pumpkin shapes and laminate them. I traced mine onto black cardstock before I laminated them. You'll also need to grab some painters tape.
Once your materials are prepped, stick your shape pumpkins on the walls around your house and also stick your black pumpkin shapes on the wall too. For younger kids you'll want to keep the shapes closer to their matching pumpkin and for older kids you can spread them out more.
Once you've set up your pumpkin shape cards all around the room then encourage your kids to go and match the correct black shape to the matching shape pumpkin. The more spread out the cards are, the move your kids have to MOVE!
I did this activity with my preschooler (age 3.5) and my toddler (age 22 months) and it was a HIT! I didn't think my toddler would be able to do the activity independently, but he totally did after I modeled how to do it one time!
Now whenever we are home and they have some free time my two little ones love to go and match the pumpkin shapes.
While we did this activity we talked about simple shape words like triangle, oval, square, star, heart, square, rectangle, and circle! You could even use the plant pumpkin template to make even more shape cards with more complex shapes- like hexagons and pentagons. I labeled the shapes in the Pumpkin Shape template so if you decide to print them on another color (instead of black) kids can work on recognizing the shape names.
Do you love activities that get your kids moving and learning? If so, here are a few more activity ideas from my Move & Learn partners:
